Hercules two cylinder marine engine built by San Francisco based Hercules Gas Engine Co. circa 1909. There are very few California Hercules engines and this is the only example of a marine engine that I know of. The engine was built after 1906 when Peerless Motor Company contracted to build engines for Hercules. It is an L head design, approximately 10 hp with cam trip ignitors in the top of the cylinder. The engine is complete, includes a two inch Scheblar carburetor, ignitors, reverse gear, 2 brass tags (Hercules and Peerless) and water pump. There is still evidence of original dark (black?) paint. The pistons are stuck but the engine is in excellent mechanical condition. Cylinders have been soaking with oil for sometime so it should not take much to break loose. You can view a similar engine in the book, The Regan Vapor Engine, by Jack Alexander on page 166. This engine came from a fresh water environment and there is no signs of salt water damage. Owned for over 20 years. Photos and detailed description
